A course and exam for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.

Course Content

Basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling, Global Maritime Distress Safety System

Price £80.00 per person plus £76 exam fee payable directly to the RYA. Maximum of 10 students per course

Previous experience and knowledge None

Duration 10 hours inclusive of 3 hours pre course reading plus exam time

Age Must be 16 to take the exam

The exam SRC exams consist of a written theory exam and assessment in the practical use of marine VHF radios The exam fee is payable in advance to the RYA.

What To Bring

Recent passport sized photo, either a digital code or a physical photo.

A form of photographic ID

The RYA SRC application form printed in landscape format with which you will receive upon payment of the assessment fee from the RYA

If you fail to bring ALL of the above, you will not be eligible to sit the assessment on the day
